"Creating Coherence: The Transformative Power of Setting Intentions"

What is Intention? At its core, an intention is a purpose or plan that guides our actions and decisions. We all have daily tasks that we accomplish, but how often do we perform these actions with clear, deliberate intent? Too often, we operate on autopilot—living by muscle memory without giving thought to our deeper goals. Think about the times you've driven somewhere but couldn't recall the details of the drive itself. That autopilot mode serves a purpose but can also be where we fail ourselves, not defining and clarifying our intentions enough to truly guide our lives.

As Christians, we are reminded of this key principle in

“Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure.” Proverbs 4:25-26:

This scripture teaches us to be focused and intentional, considering the direction of our actions. But how often do we do this? How often do we drift without a clear sense of purpose?

The Science Behind Intention

We’ve all seen people who seem to achieve their heart’s desires even when the odds are stacked against them, and we might wonder why our path isn’t as smooth. The answer often lies in the clarity of their intention.

More and more scientific research is showing that our interconnectedness with the environment and the universe plays a vital role in how our intentions shape our reality. We are made of energy, and we rely on the energy of the universe for information and exchange. This is where the concept of quantum entanglement comes into play, particles become interconnected, and the state of one instantly influences the state of another, regardless of distance.

Another fascinating concept is the biofield, the energy field that surrounds and penetrates all living organisms. This biofield is believed to influence our health and well-being, acting much like a communication channel. Think of it like sending an email: it has an IP address, travels into the unknown, and yet lands precisely where it was meant to go. Similarly, when we set clear intentions, we send energy out into the universe, and it returns to us in the form of opportunities, guidance, and insight.

Christian Perspective on Intention

As Christians, we have an even more profound connection to intention. When we set clear intentions, we open ourselves to receiving guidance from God. Proverbs 16:3 encourages us to “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” But to commit something to God, we must first be clear about what we are asking for, where we are headed, and why.

There is sometimes a misconception that God no longer communicates as He once did, or that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are no longer active. But the truth is, God is ever-present, His Holy Spirit still moves, and Christ lives within us. The question is: are we being intentional in our relationship with Him?

Matthew 7:7 reminds us,

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”

We have access to divine communication, but we need to approach it with purpose—through prayer, worship, praise, gratitude, and meditation.

Setting intentions brings coherence into our lives. Without awareness and intentionality, life becomes chaotic, disorganised, and full of confusion. In a world dominated by technology and constant stimulation, our ability to listen, feel, and discern God’s will becomes harder unless we purposefully tune in. It’s important to remember that while we may not always get the answers we expect, a clear focus allows us to see the answers that are given.

Intention and Coherence

When our intentions are aligned with our actions, we create a more coherent energy field around us, which supports us in reaching our goals. Isn't this the very message woven throughout scripture? In James 2:14-17, we are reminded that faith without works is dead.

Intentions without actions will not yield results. But when we combine intention with faith, action, and alignment with God’s will, our paths become clearer, and our lives more purposeful.

Building Intentional Living

To begin setting intentions and building a more coherent, focused life, here are some biblical practices that align with modern approaches to intentional living:

  1. Morning RitualsPsalm 5:3: “In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.”

  2. Goal SettingProverbs 16:3: “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”

  3. AffirmationsPhilippians 4:8: “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right…think about such things.”

  4. JournalingProverbs 3:3: “Let love and faithfulness never leave you; write them on the tablet of your heart.”

  5. Mindful ActionsEphesians 5:15: “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise.”

  6. GratitudePhilippians 4:6: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

  7. ReflectionPsalm 119:59: “I have considered my ways and have turned my steps to your statutes.”

  8. Accountability PartnersHebrews 10:24-25: “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together...”

By incorporating these practices into our daily routines, we can strengthen our ability to live intentionally and with purpose.
